A prominent gang leader escaped from his United Kingdom prison cell after being temporarily released in order to celebrate Christmas Day with his family.

Blake Donnellan, a 31 year old male inmate and gang leader, went missing on December 25th, 2011.

“Donnellan was convicted of conspiracy to supply drugs along with Craig Harbar, Steven Armstrong, Neil Hazelwood and Terence Gray” (Burrows, 2017, n.p.).

Police caught them stopped on the A38, travelling from Manchester to Plymouth. As suspected, police discovered immense amounts of cocaine and other drugs.

“During their trial… there were indications the gang were making fortnightly deliveries from Manchester to Plymouth which could have totalled 56kg of cocaine worth £2.8 million over a seven-month period” (Burrows, 2017, n.p.), says Recorder Nicolas Gerasimidis. The prosecution described Donnellan as the “area manager” which added an additional 15 years to his sentence. The rest of the gang members received prison sentences ranging from two to eight years (Burrows, 2017).

After being sentenced to 15 years of jail time for “heading up a multi-million pound cocaine operation” (Burrows, 2017, n.p.), Donnellan decided to breakout and has been on the run ever since. His last known whereabouts were in Bude, Cornwall, England, UK. He had close links to Plymouth and Manchester as well.

“It would appear [Donnellan] was heading towards the end of his sentence as he would have been released after seven and a half years,” says former Detective Inspector, Dave Dale. “I would be concerned that due to his previous links with other crime groups he might be able to access opportunities and routes overseas to other countries where we may not necessarily have an extradition treaty.’” (Burrows, 2017, n.p.

It seemed highly unlikely that Donnellan would ever go back to Cornwall, Plymouth, or Manchester because of his easy recognition. He is too well known around there; it would take only one person to spot him and Donnellan would be back behind bars.
